Mindful Mornings with Moms series held at Mount Vernon Honor Academy
Three sessions of Mindful Mornings with Mom were held at Mount Vernon Honor Academy this school year led by Reading Specialist Regina Ferraro, Social Worker Alison McGean and Parent Liaison Veronica Graham. The workshop series introduces mindfulness techniques and fundamental yoga practices for parents to enhance self-care and to use with their families at home.
Ms. Ferraro initiated the session with purple hearts symbolizing the school colors. Each parent could select an aromatherapy scent to add to the heart and place beside them on their yoga mats. She then guided the parents through soothing yoga stretches and deep breathing exercises.
Ms. McGean opened the discussion with an activity to create a bracelet with and a word that inspires them. She then guided a conversation on stress management, coping strategies, tips for better sleep and emphasized the importance of self-care.
The session concluded with a Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Committee brochure highlighting topics covered, links to additional information and a resource information folder provided by the parent liaison. All of the mothers and grandmothers enjoyed the workshops and expressed interest in continuing these sessions regularly.
